&amp;quot;https://ssl.&amp;quot; : &amp;quot;http://www.&amp;quot;);document.write(unescape(&amp;quot;%3Cscript src='&amp;quot; + gaJsHost + &amp;quot;google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E&amp;quot;));try {var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(&amp;quot;UA-10834299-2&amp;quot;);pageTracker._setDomainName(&amp;quot;.diylx.cn&amp;quot;);pageTracker._trackPageview();} catch(err) {}</copyright><pubDate>Sat, 04 Sep 2010 20:41:52 +0800</pubDate><item><title>英语教育专业申请详谈(TESOL)</title><author>lynn.han1021@gmail.com (Lynn)</author><link>http://diylx.cn/cat_29/481/</link><pubDate>Sun, 06 Dec 2009 22:33:14 +0800</pubDate><guid>http://diylx.cn/cat_29/481/</guid><description><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;<span style="font-size: small">先自我介绍一下。我是中山大学外语学院02级英语专业的学生，，12月18日在广州仲恺考试中心考的笔试，19日上午考口试。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">一月初已经知道可以去拿成绩了，不过当时正在考期末考，为了不影响心情，便决定等到1月12日男友考完试再去拿。考完试当天其实觉得自己考得不错，但是随着取成绩日期的逼近，心里还是惴惴不安，拿到成绩单的时候，终于松了一口气：</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Listening9.0, Reading7.5, Writing8, Speaking8，Overall 8。<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">申请流程</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small"><span style="font-size: small">英语教学专业有不同的名称，没有工作经验的学生一般多选择TESOL（Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages）课程。在英国有不少优秀的大学提供该课程，比如：York、Newcastle、Stirling、Liverpool等。TESOL专业一般会要求学生有语言学方面的背景。此外，还有一些院校也可以接受没有语言专业背景但是热爱英语教学专业的申请人，比如Newcastle大学和Stirling大学。这些大学语言系实力强大，此专业深受学生好评。只要你对英语教学充满热爱，也有不错的雅思或者托福成绩，大学都会认真考虑你的申请。 </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">我申请了香港大学和香港中文大学，两间大学都有网申系统，可以信用卡网上交申请费，分别是180HKD和150HKD（具体哪间是多少钱不记得了），很方便，交费之后就会有申请号码，方便以后查询。跟英国的大学相比，香港的大学网申开始的日期很晚，好像大概是12月开始，两间大学都使用自己的推荐表，有一些特定的问题要求推荐人回答，推荐表可以在研究生院的网页上面找到。每年的网申截止日期都会有些小改变，今年就是港大1月30日，香港中文大学2月28日。Supporting Documents最好也在那之前寄到，具体宽限可以email或者打电话给小蜜问问。香港中文大学是把材料寄到学院，而港大是寄到研究生院，网页上都有说明。其中，香港中文大学要求成绩单要直接由教务处寄出，推荐信也要由教授亲自寄。关于寄材料还要注意，如果你是要赶某个deadline的话，一定要注意那个deadline之前会不会是公众假期，我当时就是遇上春节，年廿八开始，（还有好几天才到1月30日）研究生院就停止办公了，所以快件在那个时候根本送不过去。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">除了基本的Personal Statement/Statement of Purpose, Reference,CV，GT/IELTS成绩（港大要求原件），Academic Report (在学明),Transcript(成绩单)，身份证件复印件（香港大学要求）之外，每个学院对申请材料的要求都有一些不同，研究生院网页或者学院的Prospectus会有详细说明，我就我自己的专业来说一下。<br />Research Proposal 在港大研究生院网页上有每个学院对RP的要求都不一样，博士生一般要求20页的，而我的专业的MPhil则要求四页纸，而且对整个RP的format都作出了明确的规定，分哪几部分，每部分多长，并且要求必须在截止日期的四个星期之前找到一位教授来讨论。这个RP就是整个申请过程中最最重要的东西，香港对GT和GPA要求都不高，也没有要求PS，这是因为MPhil是要研究型人才，主要看研究能力，而你的研究能力就体现在这份Research Proposal里，你的申请的成败最终也取决于Proposal的好坏，因为最后会有一组教授来评估你的Proposal，决定要你还是不要你。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">为了写好这份Proposal，你必须做很多准备。港大英文中心的网页上有几份成功申请者的范文可供参考，但是如何将Proposal写出来，其实已经是后话。我想很多同学读了三年大学，其实并真正严格按照学术研究的要求来写过正式的原创的论文，也没有真正做过什么research，因此忽然想像出一个Proposal来并不是太容易，当然，理工科或者商科跟老师一起项目的同学又另当别论。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">要写好Proposal就要先定个具体方向，这个方向不是随便定出来的，应该去你想要申请的大学和专业的主页上面去看看，都有哪些教授，谁的方向是你感兴趣的，有没有什么相关的topic可以做。之所以要看这些资料是因为后面还要跟教授套词的，如果你想要做的东西在你要申请的大学无人问津的话，那你申请到的希望就很渺茫了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">找到方向或者Topic之后就可以去看书了，建议在看自己专业的书之前，先看一本系统介绍写Research Paper的Methodology的书，会让你在找资料和写作的时候事半功倍。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">看了一些书，有了比较成型的想法之后可以试着写个outline，然后就可以去跟教授套词了。套词要早些开始，因为搞不好要换题目的，教授有的时候出差可能一个月都不回的，提早三个月都不算早了。但是去套词的时候，自己一定要有想法，因为如果你两手空空，只有一些分数和简单陈述的话，教授不会对你有多大兴趣，也很难给你提出意见。因此套词的时候要附上初步的outline，就是proposal的缩微版，应该包括proposal当中主要的内容。如果教授有兴趣，他会给你提出一些意见，例如再看些什么书，哪部分要改进之类的，如果你的研究跟他的研究兴趣不符，他会叫你去找别人。你也可以发信给课程的director，他可能会根据你所说的研究兴趣将你的信转给合适的人。找到教授之后就继续好好地写RP吧。MPhil的竞争很激烈，一定要呕心沥血地写好。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Study Plan 这个是香港中文大学要求的，800字，其实就是研究提纲，我将PS,RP合并着写在里面了，然后又另外附上了PS和RP。至于怎么写就不在这里赘述了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">申请香港其实比申请英国更加呕心沥血，重写了许多材料，也做了许多准备。但是最终还是给港大拒了，中文大学的申请结果还要再等。后来知道，有好些人是读完Master之后再申请香港的MPhil的，或许我真的还没有ready吧。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">我在前文写到的东西其实有好多是我自己也没有做到的，或者当时不知道的。有时候想，如果我当初知道这些东西知道得更早，结果会不会跟现在有所不同？愿后来者加倍努力，好运。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">如何写Research Proposal&mdash;&mdash;OUTLINE </span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">在准备出国申请的文书当中，Research Proposal未必是每个人都必须完成的任务，MA和MSc很少有要求RP的，申请MPhil时需要用到的可能性比较大，如果是申请香港的MPhil，那么这几乎是必过的一关。每间学校对Format的要求不一样,长短也不一样,因此我写的时候是按照要求最复杂的一间学校的要求和开题报告的一般要求结合来写的,一次作为基础,修改成每间学校所需要的样子。回想当初写RP的时候其实走了很多弯路，因为根本不了解究竟应该怎么去写，尽管在网上找了很久的资料，也找到一些成功申请的人的范文，但实际上还是不得要领，直到快要交差之前几天才偶然开始看专门介绍如何做教育学研究的教科书，真有种相见恨晚的感觉。当时我时间很赶，只能写了个大概。现在所有申请文书都已经写完了（目前看来是这样），因此拿出时间来，根据我所看的书(Applying Educational Research: a practical guide, fifth edition)，重新总结RP的写法，既是自己的读书笔记，也希望对以后要写RP的人有所帮助。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">1. Purpose of study 研究目的Statement of purpose 目的How your study builds on previews research 与已有研究的关系Contribution 此研究的价值与贡献</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">2. Frame your information needs as a set of questions that will guide your literature search:通过提问的方式确定文献搜索的大纲</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 2. Contact experts who can answer your questions directly orguide you to relevant publications 找专家咨询</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 3. Prepare a report of the findings of your literature review 写文献综述</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">看完这些我才发现，其实有的时候，按部就班还是有很多好处的，其中之一就是少走一些不必要的弯路。回想过去写论文的经验，通常都是从step 5开始的，有时候绞尽脑汁想出来一些关键词，搜索出来的文章却不着边际，甚至根本就找不到什么资料，真是事倍功半；也曾试过搜来一大堆的东西，可是看了就忘，写论文的时候想要参考些什么又要重新一篇一篇地看，很费时间；也曾试过看完一大堆东西，脑子里面一团糟，怎么也理不出来一个头绪，写出来的东西像一盘散沙&hellip;&hellip;所以接下来就一步一步地看看该干什么。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 1 问问题</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">这种提问的方式是我以前所不知道的。这是非常有用的一个方法，也可以帮自己理清思路，搞清楚自己究竟想找到些什么样的材料，写出来的literature review也会更有条理和逻辑。例如，一个想研究学生打斗和学校管理问题的小学教师可能会问：&ldquo;What anger management and conflict resolution programs, if any, have been developed for use at the elementary school level? What are thecharacteristics of these programes? Is there any evidence that they areeffective?&rdquo;</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">这些问题只是一个起点，在搜索和阅读文献的途中可能会修改现有问题和增加新问题。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 2 请教专家</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">对我们来说也就是自己的老师，或者在对方学校联系到的教授了。由于我们自己知识面有限，对学科研究的现状也不了解，因此提出来的问题未免有所偏颇和遗漏。老师有时候会直接回答我们的问题，有时候会提出一些意见，介绍我们看某些书，找某方面的资料，这些都将使我们受益匪浅。对我来说，本校的老师由于各种各样的原因，都没有对我的proposal提出建设性的意见，对我帮助最大的，倒是港大的一位教授。我们只通过一次信，他看完我的proposal，写了回信，从topic，research questions, methods, references几方面都给了意见，虽然简短，对我的启发却很大。一句话，专家一定有能力帮助你，但是能不能请得动他们，就要看缘分和你自己的功力了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 3 第二手材料</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">第一手材料是指别人针对自己做的研究写的报告，而第二手文章（通常都是review, digest）就是对别人做过的研究和报告进行总体回顾和评论。所以一开始时看一些第二手材料可以快速地对自己要研究的领域的历史和现状有大概的了解，节省许多时间。而且通常在review的references里面都会列出许多这个领域里面的重要作品，非常有参考价值。<br /><br />Step 4 找索引<br />教育类经常用到的索引有: the Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE), Resources in Education (RIE), 两个都是由the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) 维持，网上可以找到。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 5 描述符<br />描述符与我们平时用的关键词不同，在Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors里面列举了许多描述符，使用描述符进行搜索可以搜索到尽可能多的文献。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 6 第一手材料<br />有一些文章只需要读abstract便可，有的只要读某一部分，有的可以细读。阅读关于同一个话题的一系列文章时，应该先读最近的文章。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 7 把文献分类<br />分类文献既是为了方便之后的引用和参考，确立优先次序，也有助于理清思路和逻辑。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Step 8 着手写literature review</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">一份正式的literature review（而不是某篇文章里面的一部分）包括几个部分：<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Introduction: 介绍动机和原因，搜索文献过程中提出的问题（step 1），用到的索引，覆盖的年限，遇到的问题或困难，如果用了secondary sources，也可以将相关的问题历史发展状况在这部分提出。<br />Findings: 这一部分可以通过提出的问题进行组织，也可以用关键词分类<br />Discussion: 对此领域或者关于这个话题的文献进行综合评述，提出建议<br />References: 凡是引用到的都要写，而文中没有提到的不要写出来。格式通常遵循 the American Psychological Association (APA) 的引用格式<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">TIPS:<br />直截了当地指出你在引用别人的理论、研究或观点。例如，当某人在描述一种活动的特点和好处时，你可以说：&rdquo;Somebody (19xx) claims that &hellip;&rdquo;，如果此人做了调查研究，可以说：&rdquo;Somebody (18xx) found that &hellip;&rdquo;，如果作者建立了新的理论或引用别人的理论，分别可以说成：&rdquo;Somebody (20xx) theorized that &hellip;&rdquo;， &ldquo;Somebody (19xx) referred to someone&rsquo;s theory of&hellip;&rdquo;</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">步骤的先后（文章名字可能有一定出入，记不太清楚了）：<br />1. 关于我为什么要出国</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">2. 关于如何准备雅思考试：雅思备考经验系列文章，包括听力、阅读、写作、口语、考前冲刺和备考计划。关于用IELTS8＋这个账号还有段故事，就是我本来想叫IELTS8，提醒自己目标是8分，但是已经有人注册了这个账号，于是我就放了个加号在后面，&ldquo;行百里者半九十&rdquo;嘛，那就用8.5做目标好了。最后考出来的成绩还算对得住这个账号。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">3. 关于何时开始准备申请材料，Personal Statement和reference</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small"><br />4. 关于如何写research proposal和study plan，我也有写过专门的文章，题目大概就是《如何写research proposal》，具体关于申请港大注意事项的，有《被拒之后回头写写申请港大》</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">5．关于怎样办存款证明，见abroad版文章《今天去工行办了存款证明》</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">6．关于出国人员档案的处理，可以参考我跟squarelove在abroad版写的《出国人员档案处理》，各种办法，成功和失败的经验都写在回帖里了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">7．关于办理大宗对外汇款，我还没有写，迟点补上。<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">8．关于签证，现在办，办好了再发文，但到时候也只能站内信给还在校内的人了。才发现，原来不知不觉之中，已经写了那么多关于出国的文章，重复的东西就不说了，只讲讲在那些文章里没有涉及到的东西。Cardiff大学是第一间给我口头offer的大学，关于它的情况我也在abroad版写过文章。它给我的感觉其实一直都不错，从来中国面试，到回去之后的联络，到各部门的跟进其实都很贴心。这是一间还不错的大学，尤其在教育方面，可惜它还是不够好，不能够满足我的志愿和虚荣心，因此我只有辜负它了，其实心里还是有一点点愧疚。听说那是个美丽的地方，如果以后去了英国，一定去那里看看。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Warwick是我闲着的时候申请的，还寄了雅思成绩原件过去。当时是发现自己竟然只申请了牛津剑桥港大中大，都是不好申请的学校，去Cardiff吧，落差又太大，于是就申请了华威。当时被华威的网申系统折磨了好久，整整一个月都申请不成功，最后才发现，原来是在我贴上去的Personal Statement里面有一个中文的逗号导致无法提交。这个问题还是麻烦华威的网申系统的工作人员帮我查出来的，华威的教授见我申请的是MA by research（这个不用申请费），还专门写信建议我转到普通的Master（要申请费），我就转了，也没有额外交钱。Squarelove也申请了华威，但是最后因为专业的关系也决定不去了，只能对华威的耐心说声谢谢了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">Oxford是有名的学校，剑桥的老师在email中给了我非正式offer（去英国的没有奖也是叫offer的）之后几天，Oxford的offer信便到了我的邮箱里，当时有双喜临门的感觉。Oxford的申请表格有好多页，特别难填，还有open question，每种材料都要一式几份，要求两篇几千字的writing sample&hellip;还有什么已经忘记了，反正最后寄TNT快递的时候整袋东西快两斤重，用掉我250大洋。那边收到东西以后还email来又叫我回答了几个open question后来才给我的conditional offer，也是来之不易了。要求的条件基本上跟剑桥差不多。最后之所以去剑桥而不去牛津是一种感觉吧，因为有师姐去过，所以比较有安全感一些，剑桥有学生来过中大宣讲，算是对那边的校园生活也有一点点的了解了。最近听说外院的廖老师也要去剑桥做访问学者一年，心里好高兴，即使不能经常见面，知道有个熟人在那边心里也安定一些。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">HKU是第一间拒我的学校，让我深深感觉到免费的午餐不是那么容易吃得到的。为了申请HKU的MPhil，应该说我付出了不少时间和金钱，reference专门根据它的要求重写，research proposal也是专门为它而写的，磨了好久才磨出来，第一次去套词，第一次知道真正的学术规范是什么。一篇一千多字的proposal是我看了好多书和资料，又请了研究生师姐chilin帮忙修改，又根据教授的反馈再看书再修改，算是这么多申请材料中最难写的一份了，所以收到拒信的时候着实失落了一下。但是这个申请过程也让我学到了许多东西，也真切地明白到自己在学术上的种种不足，可以更加脚踏实地地去努力。我喜欢香港这个城市，有机会的话，我还想回到HKU，读书好，如果能教书就更好了，不过那是个更遥远的梦想了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">CUHK，申请CUHK的MPhil的过程和麻烦跟申请HKU基本上一致，它就是还多了个study plan，然后结果方面，目前还是pending，我想我的名字也许在waitinglist上面的不知道哪个位置吧。到了这个时候，我也不会等下去了，就&ldquo;叠埋心水&rdquo;去剑桥就好了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">总而言之，申请香港的MPhil是个很有挑战性的过程，因为MPhil都是全奖的，很多北方的牛人也盯着那每月一万多的studentship，还有人是硕士毕业申请MPhil的，也有很多人想用香港作为跳板或者作为终站，因此申请香港的竞争很激烈，我之所以没有成功，很大程度上是因为我无论从思想上还是行动上都没有做好百分之百的准备吧。祝后来者可以做得更好。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">最后说说剑桥。申请剑桥和牛津其实是同步的。剑桥的表格也是有很多页然后很难填，而且剑桥的奖学金有另外一个申请表，上面几乎全是open question，填得晕头转向。当时刚填完MARS的open question，还借鉴了一下。针对奖学金申请，戴凡老师非常好人地亲自帮我重新写了一封推荐信，真是令我非常感动。要申请牛剑的同学还要注意的一点是，虽然申请截止的日期可能很晚，在一月底或者二月，然而如果申请奖学金的话，deadline是不一样的，可能在十一月底甚至十月底所以大家一定要搞清楚自己要赶上哪一个deadline，我当时也是因为这样才用了快递，花了250大洋（超重），贵呀。但是这250其实还是花得值的，因为这样我就在一月底接到offer而不用在二月初去北京参加面试。英国的很多高校会在二三月的时候来中国组织面试，有的在广州，有的在北京。去北京面试的话就不止多花双程火车票/机票的钱，变数也就更大了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">材料寄出去一段时间之后，便收到我申请的学院发过来的一封邮件，给了一份15页的论文给我，让我写800字的critique，以此来代替面试。我隐约知道这应该是最后一步了，过了这一关，offer也就拿到了，所以又开始费心写critique，问了老师意见也参考了一般critique的写法，800字实在很少，所以就挑了一个方面来写吧。交了critique之后又是等待，一月底，在过年之前收到了学院的建议性offer。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small">之后，1月31日学院寄出正式conditional offer给我，2月1日剑桥奖学基金寄出shell奖学金的申请表格给我，距离我递出奖学金申请资料已经有两个多月了，因为在学院录取我之前，他们不会正式受理我的申请的。收到申请表之后又开始伤脑筋了，因为又是N个open question，不但问了学术方面的，也问了研究经历，领导经验，职业生涯设计等等各方面的问题。当我收到这些表格的时候已经离3月1日的deadline不远了。</span></p><p><span style="font-size: Cherishing the desire to fully realize my self-fulfillment, I have always hoped that my life will consist of materializing a succession of aspirations and ideals.</span></span></p><p style="text-align: left"><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">&nbsp;</span></span></p><p style="text-align: left"><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">Our dreams are the impetus that drives us to make progress. If we liken ourselves to planes, our dreams are the maintenance and fuel that drive us forward to reach our goals. Some planes may never have flied, while others may have landed in many places. It all depends on their goals and jet fuel supplement. As an English teacher who has worked in this field for over three years, I have a clear vision of the future of English teaching in China, and I am determined to scale a higher height in English in a more advanced country which is rich in jet fuel. We were required not only to lay a solid foundation in our major coursework, but also to have a good command of English so as to meet the demands of society. Within such a nourishing atmosphere, I developed myself in a comprehensive way. Apart from my major coursework study, I nurtured my gift for English and spent most of my spare time teaching English to others. I worked as a part-time English teacher at Li Yang Crazy English training school and as an English tutor to middle school students and adults. My interest and ability in English grew in this process.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">&nbsp;</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">I was recruited by Beijing Bayi Middle School to teach English after my graduation. In order to enrich my experience,I studied by myself the educational psychology in my spare time. I also did some research work comparing American and Chinese education. I found that Chinese students and teachers are superior to the Americans in knowledge accumulation, but we are inferior to Americans in potential, because the American teachers have been exerting significant importance on the students&rsquo; psychology while nearly 2／3 Chinese teachers are poor in this aspect. Realizing such a problem in Chinese way of teaching, I have perfected my teaching in daily life. For example, I often praised my students in class no matter how simple the questions were; I adopted the &ldquo;portfolio system &ldquo;in class especially for those from poor families or single-parent families to &ldquo;talk&rdquo; with them in a more informal way; I encouraged the students who lagged behind with the method of &ldquo;yes-right hand and no-left hand&rdquo; that is, if he or she knew the answer, then they put his or her right hand up, vice verse&hellip;To my delight, my endeavor paid in the end : nearly all of my students gradually became more confident and like English more and more. Besides teaching the students, I also did some training work to the new employees, introducing them how to lead-in, how to make the boring grammar more vivid, how to make the students more interested in the class by using the PPT and real materials. &nbsp;</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">&nbsp;</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">However, there are still things that make me confused. In China, parents treat their children&rsquo;s education very seriously. Children are exposed to English on the day they start kindergarten. Some poorer parents even lead a bitter life to save money so that their children can attend an English training program after class. However, such &ldquo;English fever&rdquo;, to some extent, speeds up polarization of students&rsquo; English level, and more seriously, many students&rsquo; &ldquo;hate&rdquo; English from a young age.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">&nbsp;</span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">So, How to deal with this problem? I have been asking myself this question, and have found the answer in myself. What I have mastered is far from enough for me to figure out the best way to teach English. In addition, I think that I need to improve myself in a comprehensive manner, not only in academic field but also in personality. As we know, teachers are called the engineer of people&rsquo;s soul. So they must cultivate themselves both morally and professionally.
