<trackback:ping>http://diylx.cn/cmd.asp?act=tb&id=492&key=f7637246</trackback:ping>

Quantitative Psychology

Industrial / Organizational Psychology
J/S GPA: 3.7, Major GPA: 3.89, GRE: 570 + 800 + 4.0, TOEFL: 106

<span style="font-size: (北大算法）。

Quant: APA Divsion 5 (http://www.apa.org/divisions/Div5/programs.html)
I/O: SIOP Graduate School Info (http://www.siop.org/gtp/gtplookup.asp)

Quantitative

I/O (Pinkylove):

<br neuroscience?

In elementary school, my friends often asked me why I always did well in all subjects. What I could reply was just “work hard and concentrate”. In fact, when I was bored and tired after writing lots of characters for 15 times to remember them, I thirsted for a method more scientific than simply spending a lot of time on cramming. Later, when I started to learn English, my teacher taught me an “optimized schedule” based on Ebbinghaus’ research to help memorize huge numbers of English words. This not only helped me learn English more efficiently but also inspired me to wonder how our brain processes and arranges the knowledge that we learned daily, and how we could make use of future discoveries to aid more complex educational activities, such as comprehension of a theorem in mathematics. Maybe this would be similar to how we cleaned up our house to achieve an optimal status within a given space, and how we found the best bus route to a friend’s home in a metropolis. The solutions must be intricate but possible, and every step to the goal will be important.

Thinking that cognition and learning are functions of nervous system, charact eristics of life forms, I chose biological sciences as undergraduate major. In college, I attended a number of lectures, of which most were informative and impressive by elaborated slides and magically apprehensible style of narration, while a few were so dull that I gained nothing from them. Perception of visual and auditory information plays a crucial role in our development, study and career. Though we have summarized much experience to improve communication and education, we need more evidence from research to reach perfection
. To make good use of my knowledge and my motivation, I decided to turn to the overlap of biology and psychology after my graduation. My dream was further enlightened in a visit to the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning in Beijing Normal University in July 2006, where a team of researchersapplied their research results on language acquiring to recompilation of text book for elementary school. This aroused my sense of mission to contribute to human intelligence. Soon after, Daniel Schacter’s “The Seven Sins of Memory” showed me more exciting and interesting questions that have been answered or remain unknown.

This interdisciplinary science embraces biology, psychology, mathematics, philosophy and other fields to conduct comprehensive study. My work has trainedme an interactive teamplayer, who is capable of complete understanding and clear expressing, quickly raising key questions. With solid knowledge and skills, I clutch every opportunity to learn from others to continuously increase my research capacity. I hope that my preciseness, honesty and creativity will lead to a great contribution.

<span graduate school……

Overall GPA 3.84, Major GPA 3.91
T 650+5, G 630+3.5 （汗，只准备了一个上午的作文，一周的verbal，能这样也就可以了……）

Offer: Yale, Brown, Indiana, Iowa, KSU
Interview: ASU, UIUC (withdrawn to others)
Rejection: UCLA, UCSB, SUNY-Buffalo, UPenn
Withdraw: Cornell, Dartmouth, JHU, NYU, BU, Emory, OSU, PSU, Tufts, UTexas-Au
stin, USC

<br With the curiosity to understand human beings and the desire to explore human nature, I chose to study psychology. Beijing Normal University, the renowned university with best psychology department in China, provides me with a strong academic atmosphere and a solid psychology basis. In contrast, psychologists try to find out the commonness in various complicated phenomenon, abstract general psychology principles and use them to improve the quality of life. Therefore, on one hand, I consciously apply psychology knowledge to explain people’s behaviors and social phenomenon; On the other hand, I utilize psychology research methods to study realistic issues. Cooperating with three collaborators, I implemented the research on “online advertising placement and its effects on web advertisement recognition”, which was funded by Beijing Normal University Undergraduate Research Foundation. This is what Martin E.P. Seligman demonstrates in his famous book. After reading this book, I am particularly interested in the concept of Locus of Control. Meanwhile, always suffering from traffic jam, a question haunted me: who would be more anxious under time pressure circumstances, people in controllable situation or uncontrollable situation? Thus, how relative stable disposition interacts with situational factors became my major concern. As the final group project of social psychology course, I designed a field experiment to investigate the interaction of locus of control with the controllability of situation, the coping styles and their effect on people’s anxiety under time pressure. Sharing with the goal of Martin E.P. Seligman, I delivered telephone counseling with the hope of taking off clients grey glasses through which they saw a negative world. In this research, I employed a consecutive dependent variable to explored whether the magnitude of the concession affect compliance, so as to verify the validation of the reciprocal concession explanation. But for the science, the theory must be examined with a large of evidence”, said by the famous psychologist Robert J. Sternberg, America. I believe that psychological theory can be proved, for the former theory research, we can prove perfect by experiment, so the argue among different psychological theory schools will become valuable. I am interest in designing experiment programme, in the laboratory, I can prove the former theory as well as my hypothesis with accurate data. From then on, I take psychology as an interest to research.

For this belief, I was accepted by Hua Zhong Normal University with excellent result to study psychology. My cognitive psychology teacher, graduated from SUNY-Stony Brook, was research on the cognitive language including bilingual, speech perception and some language memory. Moreover, she set up a group in order to enrich our knowledge. In the group, according to our interest we chose different fields of cognitive research, and we read English literature each week, and then gave perception, from which I could touch with new research of many countries. In addition, my teaching material of cognitive psychology, with the original English edition, was written by the famous psychologist, Robert J. Sternberg. We took bilingual teaching, and the final exam was in the form of English, I ranked the first with 90 score.

In March, 2006, I had a chance to participate in the lecture and research communication of the language cognitive psychologist, Arthur Samuel, came from SUNY-Stony Brook. In the activity, the speech perception was mentioned. It referred to that listeners were exposed to a speaker whose pronunciation of a particular sound (either /s/ of /sh/) is ambiguous. And then test the participants for perceptual learning on two continua that range from /s/ to /sh/. I put forward a point about difference between single word and two-wordsin Chinese language. If we changed the mandarin initials or mandarin vowels of the first word and the second word, it would lead to a different result of perceptual learning. But the other way was to translate Chinese into English and to find the different perceptual learning between Chinese and English. Compared with this way, I thought that it was worthy of doing my research.

During June, I programmed an experiment of long-term Cross-Language Repetition Priming in Conceptual Implicit Memory Tasks of the less proficient Chinese-English bilinguals. On the basis of the research of Professor René Zeelenberg, from Indiana University Bloomington, I designed four experiments with C language in the same –language condition and cross-language condition. I used the task of lexical level or semantic level in study phase, finally, observing whether it had influence to performance of the lexical level task.

Last year, as a RA of language cognitive laboratory in the college of psychology, I made use of software of Gold Wave to compile stimulate voice for the experiment of speech signal processing, and designed experiment material for idiom tune perception of mandarin and Wuhan dialect. I also took part in record and pre-trial of other language perception experiments, which could make me understand that cognitive psychology was strict to experiment control. Therefore, if we would like to become a psychologist we must have earnest and conscientious and careful spirit to work.

As well as I known, America is the most developed country in psychology. So I hope that I would like to go America to study PH.D in order to enrich my special knowledge and research the mechanism of language we have got and help them to gain the second language, which make Chinese people study English easily. If we would like to solve some problems about language, we need contact with computer and communication to research voice intelligence and learn the religious attitude to academy.

In my option, we can understand the character and discipline of psychological phenomenon and explain interior activity in terms of language research.
